ARTs + Media
All GMS students have the opportunity to work not only in drawing and painting, but also in ceramics, woodworking, metalworking, music, drama, photography, and video production. In exploring these wide-ranging media and techniques, students gain confidence in their ability to experiment and take creative risks. At the same time, they are exposed to powerful tools for finding and expressing their voices and have opportunities to discover one or more ways to express their vision.
The GMS Arts and Media program builds skills in a joyful, creative environment where students make artwork that demonstrates originality and utilizes problem solving. Students explore how to manifest their vision, learn to value art, and discover how it connects to their lives. Throughout the entire arc of the program, students deepen their understanding of their own artistic style while honing skills and working practices in the studio.

Industrial Arts
At GMS, students take a woodshop class each year and are introduced to metalworking within the art curriculum. Students learn how to measure, cut, mill, and build cutting boards, picture frames, and a project of their choosing, using a variety of power tools in woodshop. In the metalworking unit, students design and carve several different molds before carefully pouring molten metal into them, creating their beautiful metalworks. These experiences teach them that they can do anything they set their minds to.

Digital Art
Throughout their art classes and extracurricular activities, students learn to use Photoshop and other programs to create their own artistic projects, design logos and websites for their businesses in 7th grade, and edit and manipulate photographs in 8th grade.

Fine Art
Students explore various artistic styles and mediums – from abstract doodling and painting, to sculpture and impressionist oil paintings. To understand each medium, students explore what inspires them within the real world and practice translating that emotion, thought or experience into something tangible.

Performing Arts
In support of our mission, all our students take drama and have the opportunity to participate in the Fall Musical to build confidence and cultivate their unique voices. The majority of our student body participates in our fall musical each year – either by performing on stage or joining the tech crew, giving them insight into the ins and outs of rehearsals, stage design, costume design, and lighting.
