Girls in STEM
In middle school, too many girls turn away from science, technology, engineering, and math. We do not let that happen at GMS. Our girls graduate believing they can succeed at anything, including becoming scientists, technologists, mathematicians, and engineers. Our three-year STEM curriculum draws on collaboration, hands-on learning, and real-world problems to create cross-disciplinary experiences that engage our girls’ curiosity and drive to succeed.
The majority of these classes are taught by women who are experts in their fields, demonstrating to our students every day that successful scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians look just like them.

Science
Students in our science program practice the skills that professional scientists use every day through hands-on projects, field trips, and outdoor education, allowing them to integrate their learning as they explore the natural world. Over three years, they develop the tools needed to approach scientific inquiry and excel in the most rigorous science classes in high school and beyond.

Technology
Computer programming is essential to 21st-century literacy, and we want our students to be creators of technology. Computer science is required at GMS, and our program offers multiple entry points that appeal to girls’ interests, including art and storytelling, in addition to gaming and robotics. Early projects are completed in visual languages like Scratch, and by eighth grade, students are programming in Python, a language widely used in the tech industry.

Engineering
Students engage in engineering across academic classes and extracurricular activities. They explore the applications of robotics within everyday life, understand the laws of physics through a variety of hands-on projects that require designing and building a device, and create household items within woodshop. Through a variety of Intersession courses, electives, and field trips our students have opportunities to explore architectural design, electrical engineering, construction and more

Math
Our math program is grounded in connecting logic, reasoning, and computational thinking across disciplines by engaging in collaborative problem-solving. Within our heterogeneous classes, teachers meet student needs through building community amongst peers. The result is that our girls grow as mathematical thinkers each year to the point that every GMS student completes a high school level algebra course in eighth grade.
