Academics

Our Program

Adolescent girls are eager to make connections between what they know, their direct experiences, and what they want to find out. Intellectually, they’re bridging the vibrant curiosity of childhood and the critical analysis of more mature thinking. At GMS, we preserve and nurture that curiosity to activate deeper exploration and engagement.

Our program is grounded in progressive, inquiry-based instruction and backed by growing evidence that students learn best when engaged in project-based learning and real-world tasks that require both social-emotional skills in combination with academic demands.

Backed By Real Feedback

Our program is grounded in progressive, inquiry-based instruction and backed by growing evidence that students learn best when engaged in project-based learning and real-world tasks that require both social-emotional skills in combination with academic demands.

Core academic subjects like Math, Science, Humanities, and Spanish, are taught alongside pioneering courses which prepare students not only for high school, but for the constantly evolving world beyond. All students engage in a comprehensive Computer Science curriculum, a diverse industrial arts program, social and emotional learning, and an interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Program.

Our faculty—experts in both their fields and this developmental stage—guide our students in hands-on learning, intentionally designed to teach collaboration and self-advocacy. Students are teachers and learners, presenters and listeners, building knowledge together. At GMS, we know that when girls work collaboratively, not competitively, they build stronger critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills and are better prepared for real-world challenges.

Our philosophy centers around five key elements of progressive education:

GMS provides an unusually wide variety of core and elective courses, along with an array of sports, expeditions, and extracurriculars. We create an energizing and encouraging environment so your child can try new experiences, discover new skills, and succeed and fail with equal enthusiasm

Open-ended, collaborative projects energize our way of teaching and learning, empowering all students to offer their talents, interests, and support to each other. By cooperating on shared goals and collective solutions, our students bring out the best in themselves and their classmates.

Instead of imposing traditional letter grades, our teachers offer extensive feedback and work with each child to set individual goals, help them reflect on progress and challenges, and identify opportunities for further growth. Our approach teaches children to focus on the ongoing process of growing, stretching, and becoming—rather than sprinting to the finish line of a final score. We foster self-motivation and a love of learning, as students pursue deeper understanding for its own sake.

In this time of intense intellectual, social-emotional, and physical changes, GMS teachers expertly tend to all aspects of your child’s development, both in and far beyond the classroom. Our compassionate learning community knows, understands, and supports all students for who they are—and who they are becoming.

At GMS, we continually work to create and sustain an inclusive community that fosters genuine belonging. We strive to close gaps in opportunity associated with race, ethnicity, and gender, because a truly diverse community enriches the learning experience for everyone. Our multicultural curriculum empowers all students to see themselves in their education and to share and celebrate their heritage.
